Course Contents:
Solids and bonding:
Introduction to types of bonding – classification of solid types, metals, ionic crystals, covalent crystals
Electrical Properties:
Introduction, Basic concept of electric conduction, Free electron theory and Band theory, Classification of materials, metals, semiconductors, insulators, Effective Mass.
Magnetic properties:
Introduction, Origin of magnetism, Units, Types of magnetic ordering: dia-para-ferro-ferri and antiferro-magnetism, Soft and Hard magnetic materials, examples of some magnetic materials with applications
Dielectric & ferroelectric properties:
Dielectric constant and polarizability, temperature and frequency effects, Ferroelectric crystals, Classification of ferroelectric materials: piezo-pyro and anti-ferroelectric materials.
What you'll learn: The physics behind bonding in different solids, electronic structure, electronic transport in various types of materials. This course will also help in understanding the fundamentals of magnetism and magnetic materials which are integral part of different devices. Similarly, the basics of polarization concept and different dielectric and ferroelectric materials will be discussed.
About the Instructor: Dr. Chandrasekhar Murapaka is currently working as Assistant Professor in the Department of Materials science and Metallurgical Engineering at IIT Hyderabad. He has obtained his Masters of Technology from IIT Delhi and Doctoral degree from Nanyang Technological University Singapore. Chandrasekhar’s research interests are focused on spintronic materials for memory and logic devices. Prior to joining IIT Hyderabad, he has spent two years at Spintec, CEA Grenoble, France as a Research Engineer under Enhanced Eurotalents fellowship. He has also worked as senior engineer at Globalfoundries Singapore as thin film process engineer. He has received gold medal for best PhD thesis in Physics 2015 from Materials Research Society Singapore. Till date, he has published 56 articles in peer reviewed journals and has 3 US patents granted and 5 more filed. He has contributed 3 book chapters. He has so far taught 40 credits and have more than 5 years of teaching experience.
